When I was a much younger man I read the book which is why it brings to mind today's mainstream media. Below is outlined the MOT's purpose & agenda. The correlation & similarity are spot on.

The Ministry of Truth's primary focus is on producing government propaganda and altering historical records to coincide with Big Brother's current claims. In short, the Ministry of Truth is concerned with falsifying records and recreating the past to manipulate and control the ignorant.

The Ministry of Truth is in charge of propaganda; its name means the precise opposite of what it actually does, it concerns itself with spreading lies.

The Ministry makes sure all information available to the population confirms with current party lines. They are also in charge of changing accounts of the past and destroying any evidence that will prove the Party false.

Party ownership of the print media made it easy to manipulate public opinion and the film and radio carried the process further.

In Orwell's '1984' other than the propaganda broadcast by those in power, a new language is forced upon citizens, Newspeak. Restricting free speech & instead intimidating citizens to use language that reflects & supports the party's agenda.

Liken this to the current regime insisting that certain words are not to be used. From gender pronouns to referring to illegal aliens as such to calling a long list of of other terms exactly what they are. We see a prime example of this on social media sites such as Facebook & Twitter where those who speak the truth often have their comments deleted & if they repeat those too often their accounts are locked.

What was the goal of regulating free speech & replacing it with Newspeak?

The political goals of Newspeak was eliminating traditional words from the English language and replacing them with party-approved concepts to rob English speakers of the ability to express concepts that counter the party’s ideology.

Newspeak's aim was to replace standard English, in a way that would favor the party members or the elite. It was designed to limit the range of thought of people which would make them easier to manipulate.

It is an altered English with restricted vocabulary used as a tool to limit freedom and thought.

Newspeak is a controlled language of simplified grammar and restricted vocabulary designed to limit the individual's ability to think and articulate subversive concepts.

In '1984' those who speak the truth, rather than the party line, are guilty of a thought crime. And punished for speaking against the party.

With today's MSM & social media sites I'm sure that you can see the correlation. Suppressing free speech is their goal & agenda. How long before speaking the truth becomes a crime?
